Downloaded the iso image and proceeded to make a Mac OS X bootable USB on windows. To create a bootable media to install Mac OS X leopard on my old macbook A1181. I used imageusb and installed. I was very happy to find this 10.5.4 version which worked perfectly. Many thanks to all. This downloads as a disk image named InstallMacOSX.dmg. On a Mac that is compatible with El Capitan, open the disk image and run the installer within, named InstallMacOSX.pkg. It installs an app named Install OS X El Capitan into your Applications folder. Well, for this solution you will need any running version of Mac OSX leopard or snow, either on another mac, macbook or on the same machine you want to install in (if you’re doing a re install) Use this running version to create a Mac OSX 10.5 image to the the external usb hd (DISK UTILITYRESTORE) Now Shut down the mac.
My cd/dvd drive busted WHILE I was upgrading the OS to 10.5. Now I get the folder with the question mark when I start up, or a blank screen. Other than installing a new cd/dvd drive, how can I install the OS without the drive? I only have other Intel Macs to use, no PPC. I don’t believe Firewire/Target disk will help much in this case will it? I don’t need any data from the currently unreadable hard drive - luckily had transferred everything ahead of time, but also erased a backup OS 10.4 boot drive too soon.

My cd/dvd drive busted WHILE I was upgrading the OS to 10.5. Now I get the folder with the question mark when I start up, or a blank screen. Other than installing a new cd/dvd drive, how can I install the OS without the drive? I only have other Intel Macs to use, no PPC. I don’t believe Firewire/Target disk will help much in this case will it? I don’t need any data from the currently unreadable hard drive - luckily had transferred everything ahead of time, but also erased a backup OS 10.4 boot drive too soon.
